Story  behind this piece:

Many years ago I did this portrait of a very talented gal that I blue water fished with in Tahiti.  Okima was the first and last female first mate I ever experienced during that time in my life when fishing was a passionate force.  I hope this has changed. 

We as women have fought hard during my lifetime for OUR PLACE. I remember partying one night with Martina in Dallas.  Oh I was just  another being there but I remember her fight for women in sports and her voice was strong as she was on the court.   

Okima's name in Japanese means  "TO GET UP"

How many times growing up did I have TO GET UP ...to stand up for  me as did other girls and women who were blazing a path for equality and finding OUR place  and creating our places not only in sports, the hunting world  but the arts as well as many other sectors.....that is another story.

I am very grateful that our place and our places are now protected.
